Puapualenalena and the Mocking Demons
Puapualenalena and the Mocking Demons

Here is a snippet from the Hawai'ian Folk Tale, "Puapualenalena, Wizard Dog of the Waipi'o Valley" by Thomas Cummings, Jr. I was matched with Thomas in the "Trickster" project, edited by Matt Dembicki and published by Fulcrum Press. Trickster is currently up for an Eisner Award in the Best Anthology category, and I PLEAD with you to vote if you're an artist or writer in the comics industry... we're real "underdogs".... snicker-snicker-snicker

This was my first fully digital project, so I'm pretty excited that it's part of such a well regarded anthology. I worked on this with my old Intuos 3 tablet. Not the easiest item to work with.

Thanks for voting, and let's cross our fingers for the announcement at San Diego Comicon!

The difference between working within the digital realm and the real world should be compared with a photograph and a slide. Digital work is executed on the screen, meaning it is back-lit and painted with photons (RGB). When you color on paper with paint or pencils, the image is limited by the amount of light it is able to reflect. This is a reason that poorly lit canvases are such dull photographs. The work that is executed digitally runs the risk of "dulling" once printed. I try to match the printer and paper with "color profiles" provided by the paper, printer and software companies. I have had very good luck so far, and also have some very knowledgeable friends to run to. Don't be afraid of the digital realm. You can get your feet wet by "adjusting" a piece you've scanned or photographed. I do this off and on with great results; Boney Pup and Electric Wizard.
